What Does Metallica Load and Reload Mean to Me?
Introduction
Both albums were not the most popular of Metallica discography. Both have their highs and lows. I get it for the ones that checked out. The haircuts, the style change, the look etc., was a change not everything was a fan of. At one point I was the same, but this period did grow on me. The style change was different on me too. I also share what I liked of each album of load or reload and what songs have never been played live.

The Haircuts?
As someone who liked the long hair, the style and the look of Metallica 80s into early 90s, and that raw feel felt like it was fading. This to me is understandable but I did like the older look and style better. The black album felt like to some people that Metallica was changing into a band that people were like not for me because it was the opposite of Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. So yeah, some fans checked out, and some fans came in. But either way Metallica was still rocking. This period just wasn't the greatest because of the change in image of Metallica to the style of music and James's voice was beginning to become like what it is now. Which isn't bad, but you can tell what the 90s did James and Metallica.
Style Change?
Metallica in the 80s was fast and heavy in the style of thrash metal. The 90s black album felt more rock with some leftovers of the thrash heavy style. Load and reload felt like more blues, with more southern rock. Definitely more ballads like hero of the day, mama said, and until it sleeps. The song writing definitely was different. Now these two are far from my two favorite Metallica albums but some of the best song writing which was on Load and Reload. Look at bleeding me and the drinking problem James was dealing with.
Load and reload also showed how Hetfield vocals were declining from years of heavy drinking and touring heavily. This album also showed even though Jason had been in the band for around 10 years, that he only had one song in between the two albums which was where the wild things are. Metallica definitely started to show changes in style with this album. I think overall both albums are not bad but definitely towards the bottom of my Metallica studio albums if I was to rank top to bottom.
Songs I liked?
Both albums do have some great songs but have some that aren't good at all and in my pass this song list. What songs do I like off of load? Ain't my bitch, The House that Jack built, King Nothing, bleeding me, Wasting My Hate, and Outlaw Torn. I don't mind Mama Said, Hero of the day or until it sleeps. Depending on my mood I don't mind Ronnie. I don't not like 2x4, Cure, and Thorn Within. My favorite track is Bleeding me, and my least favorite is Thorn Within.
What did I like off of reload? I do love the first five. Fuel to Better than you. I wish Metallica would play Better than you live. I do like bad seed, where the wild things are which is Jason song, another one Metallica has never played live. I also love attitude and fixxer, and cool to see Metallica finally play fixxer years ago. I am not a fan of Slither, Carpe Deme Baby, Prince Charming, or low man lyric.
My favorite song of reload is devil dance, and least favorite is low man lyric.
Songs Never Played Live?
Metallica has played everything off the first albums from kill em all to the black album, even escape got played one time. But load and reload have tons of songs that have never been played live. I don't know if Metallica will bring one out to perform live because the album is less about the heavy style and more about the bluesy style of Metallica. Which Metallica has not played other songs off other albums past load and reload up until today live like invisible kid or halos on fire.
But what songs have never been played live? Load first, the house that jack built, cure, thorn within, and Ronnie. James has played mama said live solo, which has a deep meaning to him but the whole band has not played it live besides James few performances with mama said live.
What about reload? Better than you, Slither, Bad seeds, prince charming, attitude, and where the wild things are. All have never been played live and don't know if any of these songs will ever make the setlist.
Closing Thoughts
Metallica is still alive and kicking but the 90s did have a ton of changing that reflect on the band today. You see how I have covered the change, style, and what I like off of each album of load and reload. Also, what songs have never been covered live. Overall, both albums aren't bad, but I see how some fans were done around this period. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. What did you think of load and reload? Good or bad? Thank you, friends!
