The Journey of Metallica from Death Magnetic to Beyond Magnetic
Introduction
In this post, I will talk about Metallica journey from the years between Death Magnetic to Beyond Magnetic. I will also cover the exit for Metallica from Bob Rock to Rick Rubin. This was Rob Trujillo first album with Metallica, and the comeback to the old-style Metallica had with this album, Death Magnetic. I will also cover the road in between the rock and roll hall of fame to lulu to beyond magnetic. As well as what I liked off Death Magnetic, Lulu, and beyond Magnetic. I also cover the induction of the Rock and Roll Hall of fame and the big four dates.
Leaving Bob Rock to Rick Rubin
After St. Anger came out, Metallica went out on tour with new bass member Rob Trujillo. Metallica would see how fans were disappointed with St. Anger. I also heard a story about a Metallica fan emailed Metallica, and Metallica listened to that email and critics of fans. Then decided to leave Bob Rock. Metallica would end up going to Def Jam and used Rick Rubin who was a producer to get ready for their next album, which ended up being Death Magnetic. Rick Rubin had been Slayer producer since the 80s, which made the next slayer album have to be postponed. Kerry King has talked about how the band including himself was upset. Which Kerry King and Slayer got over it. Slayer next album would be world painted blood. Then years later Slayer did a couple concerts with Metallica. In my opinion, this was the right move for Metallica as in to go to Def Jam. Even though I can understand why Slayer was upset for a moment by this move.
Death Magnetic
Death Magnetic came out on September 12th, 2008. The album felt like a come back to the classic Metallica style. You had a ballad, themes of war, fast, and heavy. As well as an instrumental song. This album was awesome, and I liked it more than the black album. This album should have come out instead of the black album in 1991, but I get why Metallica did that album at the time. The album felt like modern Metallica 2008 style and voice meets the old school style of Metallica. This album was also the first album to feature Robert Trujillo on bass.
The songs on here felts fast and heavy like That Was Just Your Life, The End of the line, and Broken, Beat and Scarred. Broken Beat and Scarred feels like a song about overcoming a lot to survive in life. We all have been there. The Day That Never Comes feels like Metallica One or Fade to Black on here. The song is slow to heavy with emotion feel and at war. All Nightmare Long felt the old gut punch of fast and heavy like your life is on a chase. Cyanide feels like another at war song and very fast heavy in battle. The Unforgiven 3 which is the third song in the series. 1 is on the black album and 2 is on reload. But this version had the piano and had that same feel of judgment and being able to forgive. This song is definitely an emotion style of song. The Judas Kiss has that heavy style to it and feels like a kiss you will regret. Suicide and redemption ended up being an instrumental song. Which the first four albums had instrumental song and the first time since And Justice for All. My Apocalypse is fast and heavy and feels like you are on the running for dying. Metallica has played every song off of this album and will play something off this album live up until modern today. Overall, the songs hold up to this day very good, and I will listen to a song off of this album to this day every now and then.
Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame
Metallica went in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. The whole band went in as in who played on studio. Basically James, Lars, Kirk, and Rob, as well as Jason, and Ray was there for his son, Cliff as appeared on stage to accept award and give a speech. Metallica played a couple songs and even one with Jason. Which was Jason first appearance since his exit in 2000. The setlist was two songs with Jason which were Master of puppets and Enter Sandman. The last song was The Train Kept A-Rollin' A tiny Bradshaw cover (w/ Jason Newsted, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Ron Wood, and Flea) to end their performance. A part of feels Dave should have gone in with Metallica but I understand why Dave wasn't inducted with the band. Hopefully the rock and roll hall of fame can get it right and induct Megadeth. I will say Metallica getting inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was awesome and a huge moment for Metallica which the band definitely deserved.
The Big 4
Between 2010 and 2011, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax played a good bit of festivals together. This was cool because this showed how Metallica and Megadeth were all on good terms after all the years of beef. Metallica, Megadeth Slayer, and Anthrax played a good bit of dates between June 16th, 2010, and September 14th, 2011, as the big 4. A DVD came out showing a concert all four played at which was in Bulgaria. Anthrax reunited with Joey, most of the original line up except for Rob. The Slayer played afterwards. Which both bands brought it. Then Megadeth performed, with Chris Broderick and Shawn Drover. Then Metallica with their lineup. Which Metallica did good and played some stuff off Death Magnetic like Cyanide. The concert ended with a few covers and member of other bands coming out to play together. For example, like Overkill by Motorhead and Am I Evil by Diamond Head. Overall, the concerts were great and showed how great these bands are live. This was different because this showed the legacy that made thrash metal a huge deal and a success over the years.
Metallica 30th Anniversary
In 2011, Metallica celebrated their 30th year as band. Metallica 30th anniversary, 4 days concert in San Franciso, California was in December around the 10th. Metallica started on October 28th of 1981. Metallica did like 4 days concert with guests from Rob Halford, Dave Mustaine, Ozzy Osbourne to Jason Newsted. Which was Jason second appearance since 2008 as a non-member of Metallica. You also saw Ron Mcgovney, who was Metallica first bass player who played on no life til leather. This concert saw Metallica plays a couple new songs like To Live to Die, and Carpe De Baby. Cool to see King Diamond and Mercyful Fate reunite. The concert for the 4 days was cool to see for the few days, and I remember seeing it on YouTube in 2011. Also, Metallica played a few new songs from the upcoming ep, Beyond Magnetic. I thought Metallica put on a great performance for the few days with excellence guests.
The Lulu Project and Beyond Magnetic
At the rock and roll, Metallica played with Lou Reed. Then Lou Reed, said backstage about one day doing an album with Metallica. A couple years later, it was like Remember that album kind of message to Metallica. So, as a man of their word, Metallica did a collab project with Lou Reed in October 31, of 2011, and the album was the View. The album single was The View. My overall opinion was this album sucked. But it wasn't supposed be good anyways and I know Metallica realized that.
Beyond Magnetic was released on December 13th of 2011. This was like to me a release to cover Metallica for releasing Lulu. But that wasn't a terrible move because this felt like four songs that could have made disc two of Death Magnetic. Beyond Magnetic isn't a bad four track album and I liked it. The first track of Hate train is a fast song for Metallica. The message to me on Hate Train is anger and hate. Just a bullet away is a fast song and has a message of losing it on someone. The song of Hell and Back is like that woman you fight with. Rebel of Babylon starts a little slow then goes fast with the usual good Metallica heavy riffs. Rebel of Babylon is like western song to me. Which my favorite out of the 4 is Rebel of Babylon. All songs have been performed live. This period showed that Metallica may have a miss kind of album. But Metallica comes back to show why they are one of the kings of metal.
Closing Thoughts
Now you have read my thoughts on Metallica journey after St anger from Death Magnetic to Lulu to Beyond Magnetic. The rock and roll hall of fame was huge for Metallica and great to see Jason Newsted go in and play a song with Metallica. The big 4 was great to see Metallica and Megadeth to be able to tour a couple concerts after their history and don't forget about Slayer and Anthrax being part of it. Metallica finally did lulu which sucked but the comeback punch was Beyond Magnetic which helped Metallica out. Metallica in the end showed why Metallica legacy may have hit the wall with St Anger but had a comeback to what modern Metallica could deliver on Death Magnetic. What Does Metallica Load and Reload Mean to Me?
Both albums were not the most popular of Metallica discography. Both have their highs and lows. I get it for the ones that checked out. The haircuts, the style change, the look etc., was a change not everything was a fan of. At one point I was the same, but this period did grow on me. The style change was different on me too. I also share what I liked of each album of load or reload and what songs have never been played live.
Metallica St. Anger - Hit or Miss?
In this post, I share my thoughts. I give the build up from Jason leaving, James going to rehab, and Metallica future a question mark. I also cover the brief period with Bob Rock as a bass player. Then Rob Trujillo comes in because Bob can't tour. St. Anger comes out with Bob Rock. But what songs do I like and dislike. What songs haven't been played live. Ranking Metallica Bass Players
In this post, I will rank all the bass players members of Metallica from Ron Mcgovney to Cliff Burton to Jason Newsted to Rob Trujillo. All 4 are great in their own way but only one can be number one. I will also say what all gave to Metallica as a whole. Jason was like a second frontman. Cliff held Metallica well together. Rob does good but does feel more like a bass player, and Ron wasn't in the band that long, but for what he offered wasn't bad as a bass player. All 4 had their periods and I break down what all 4 meant to me for their periods as members of Metallica.
